Peterson Funeral Chapel

            Wesley R. McGowen, 82, of Aurora passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.

            He was born to Arlie and Callie McGowen on March 24, 1938 in Marshfield, MO.  He graduated from Verona High School in 1957.  After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was trained as a machinist.  He served on many ships including USS Tanner, USS Caloosahatchee, USS Catskill and USS Evans.  He received a National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.  He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years.

            He was a loving husband and father.  Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Irene; three daughters, Karen (Mark) Caselton of Sawyervill, IL., Robin (Jerry) Jenkins of Aurora, MO. and Ilene (Courtney) Sellers of Bella Vista, AR.; one brother, Daniel McGowen of Oklahoma; one sister, Katie Rust of Springfield, MO.; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter.

            Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 29 at 2:30 p.m. in Maple Park Cemetery with full military honors under the care of Peterson Funeral Chapel.

            Visitation will be held Saturday from 12-2 p.m. in the funeral home.

            In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation or Kidney Foundation in care of the funeral home.
