Kenneth “Wayne” Smith, 74, of Aurora, passed away June 5, 2021 at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with brain cancer.
Wayne was born on September 29, 1946 and attended Marionville and Aurora Schools, never missing a day of school in 12 years. He graduated with the Aurora Class of 1964. He married Jane “Devereaux” Smith on November 19, 1965. Wayne worked at Wilks Lumber Company for many years before starting Wayne Smith Construction Company. He was very active in the Aurora Saddle Club, currently serving as President. Wayne liked to travel and especially enjoyed a recent trip to Ireland. His greatest joy was his family especially spending time with his grandchildren. A retired minister, his presence touched countless lives.
Wayne is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Jane Smith, their four children Robert (Clara) Wilson of Aurora, Ronald (Cindy) Wilson of Aurora, Deborah (Carl) Gunn of Aurora, and Steven (Kirstie) Smith of Joplin, their nine grandchildren, Deserae (Nick) Buckmaster, Dionne Wilson, Austin (Hannah) Wilson, Rebecca Wilson, Brandon (Courtney) Wilson, Nathan (Kaylee) Gunn, Zachary Smith, Kristen (Austin Gacke) Gunn, and Rachel Smith, ten great-grandchildren, two brothers, Gary Smith of Richland, Jerry (Martha) Smith of Aurora, a brother-in-law Joe (Virginia) Devereaux of Aurora and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Thelma Smith of Aurora and a sister-in-law, Donna Smith of Richland.
Visitation will be held at Peterson Funeral Chapel on June 8th at 10:00 am with the funeral service following at 11:00 am, immediately followed by the burial at Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora.
