Elvis “Jack” Lawrence, 99, of Chadwick passed away on October 2nd from congestive heart failure and complications of Covid-19 at Nixa Nursing and Rehab.
Jack was born September 2, 1921 to Robert Engersol Lawrence and Della Mae Ellison Lawrence in Chadwick, MO. He left home to seek his fortune at the age of 16 first trying his hand at working on harvest crews and soon found himself working on a large ranch in Colorado where he was part of the hay crew. Jack worked on ranches as a cowboy until he received his draft notice for WWII. He served in the European theatre in the infantry and received two bronze stars. A few years after returning from the war Jack married Cleta Darlene Hayes of Fairfax, MO in 1950 and continued work on ranches until he eventually settled down with his family in Purdy where he raised beef cattle until retiring to Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Loran Lawrence, Troy Lawrence, Carl Lawrence, Donald Lawrence, Union Lawrence, his sister Dolores Wittenborn, and his wife Cleta.
Surviving Jack is his youngest brother Robert (Shirley) Lawrence of Marionville, daughter Kathy (Dearl) Coffer of Chadwick, son Michael (Jo) Lawrence of Elizabeth, CO, and daughter Sue Anne (Joe) Bartelsmeyer of Cape Girardeau.
Graveside services will be held Friday, October 9 at 11:00 in the Marionville IOOF Cemetery with full military honors under the care of Peterson Funeral Chapel.
